3 Accused in Durgapur Gang Rape Case Sent to 10-Day Custody

A Durgapur subdivisional court on Sunday sent three men accused in the alleged gang rape of a medical student to ten days of police custody. The charges filed against them include gang rape and criminal conspiracy. The police sought custody to question the accused and identify others involved in the shocking assault that took place outside a private medical college campus in Paschim Bardhaman district.

Medical Student from Odisha Targeted Outside Campus

The survivor, a student from Odisha studying at a private medical college in Durgapur, was reportedly attacked late Friday night. She had stepped out for dinner with a friend when the alleged assault occurred near the college premises. Her parents later lodged an FIR at the New Township Police Station. The case has triggered widespread outrage across both West Bengal and Odisha.

Odisha CM Urges Mamata Banerjee to Act Swiftly

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the horrific incident and directly appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for strict action. Expressing shock on social media, Majhi urged for an exemplary punishment of the accused and assured full support to the survivor’s family. He also directed Odisha officials to coordinate with West Bengal authorities for immediate assistance.

The BJP’s West Bengal unit criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration, calling the incident another example of the state’s deteriorating law and order. BJP leaders alleged that the police mishandled similar cases in the past and demanded a transparent probe. Party spokespersons asserted that “West Bengal is no longer safe for women,” urging voters to hold the ruling Trinamool Congress accountable in 2026.

Trinamool Congress minister Shashi Panja condemned the crime but warned political rivals against exploiting the tragedy. Panja said such incidents should unite leaders instead of dividing them for political gain. She reminded critics of similar crimes in other states and claimed the West Bengal police have already initiated a fair and thorough investigation into the Durgapur case.

Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav also spoke out, expressing concern over the rising crimes against women across India. She said the Durgapur assault reflects a deeper social failure and called for stronger state accountability. Yadav emphasized the importance of women’s helplines and safety programs, urging governments to strengthen protection measures for women nationwide.
