3 accused in Durgapur gang rape case transferred to 10-day custody

A sub-district court in Durgapur on Sunday transferred three accused in the gang rape case of a medical student to 10-day police custody. The charges filed against them include gang rape and aggravated conspiracy. The police had sought their custody to identify others involved in the gruesome attack that took place outside a private medical council lot in the West Burdwan quarter and to interrogate the accused.

A student from Odisha studying in a private medical council in Durgapur was reportedly attacked late on Friday night. She was out partying with her friend when the alleged attack took place near the council demesne. Her parents later lodged an FIR at the New Township police station. The case has sparked widespread outrage in both West Bengal and Odisha.

Odisha CM Mamata Banerjee calls for immediate action

Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has condemned the horrific incident and has directly appealed to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for strict action. Expressing his grief on social media, Majhi demanded exemplary punishment for the accused and assured full support to the victim’s family. He has directed Odisha officials to coordinate with West Bengal authorities for immediate assistance.

The West Bengal unit of the BJP has criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration, calling the incident yet another example of the deterioration of law and order in the state. BJP leaders have alleged that the police have miscalculated in handling similar cases in history and have demanded a transparent investigation. Party spokespersons have asserted that “West Bengal is no longer safe for women,” prompting voters to blame the ruling Trinamool Congress in 2026.

Trinamool Congress minister Shashi Panja condemned the crime but advised political rivals against exploiting the tragedy. Panja said similar incidents should unite leaders instead of dividing them for political gain. He reminded critics of similar crimes in other countries and claimed that the West Bengal police had earlier initiated a fair and thorough investigation into the Durgapur case.

Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav also spoke, expressing concern over the rising crime against women across India. She said the Durgapur attack reflected a deep societal failure and called for a reduction in state responsibility. Yadav stressed the significance of women’s helplines and protection programmes, urging the government to strengthen the protection system for women across the country.
