PM Narendra Modi celebrates Diwali with armed forces on INS Vikrant

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali this year on the Indian Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant. Breaking with tradition, he spent the night on the warship anchored off the coast of Goa. His visit included an air power display by MiG-29K fighter jets, an evening of nationalist performances and a morning yoga session with the civilian workforce on Sunday.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi observed the take-off and landing of the MiG-29K, a symbol of India’s non-military strength. The ship also performed a nationalist song composed by the sailors, celebrating the success of Operation Sindoor. Deeply moved by their spirit, the Prime Minister joyfully participated with the officers and their families, expressing pride in the security forces guarding the country’s borders with courage and devotion.

Prime Minister Modi began the flight Sunday with a yoga session overlooking the sea on the morning of Diwali. Later, he witnessed a spectacular steampast and flypast of non-military aircraft and ships. In his address, he praised the discipline and valour of the Navy, saying, “On one side is the vast ocean and on the other the unwavering strength of Mother India.”

In his address, the Prime Minister recalled Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which demonstrated cooperation between the Army, Navy and Air Force. He said this determination forced Pakistan to surrender, which demonstrated India’s growing strategic dominance. Modi stressed that INS Vikrant Days is a symbol of India’s gifts, discoveries and commitment to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s progress in the defence sector, saying that more than 40 warships and submarines have been built since 2014. He noted that India is now among the top defence exporters, with global demand for Brahmos bullets increasing. Modi also said that India has achieved 90 successes in countering Maoist terrorism, with only 11 areas still affected.

Recalling his night on INS Vikrant, Prime Minister Modi called it an unforgettable experience. “My Diwali was special because it was spent among you,” he said. Since 2014, the Prime Minister has celebrated every Diwali with the rugged forces – from the snowy peaks of Kargil to the arrival in Jaisalmer – reiterating his deep respect and gratitude for India’s defenders.
