The actor had been vocal about his struggles with addiction and had established a sober living facility to aid men facing similar challenges. While the actor had a history of substance use, the report mentioned a period of reported sobriety lasting 19 months.
The coroner’s report stated that Matthew Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to manage his depression and anxiety, with his last treatment occurring 1 1/2 weeks before his untimely passing.
In his memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” released in 2022, Matthew Perry detailed his teenage alcoholism and subsequent addiction to pain medication following a jet skiing accident in 1997. His addictions significantly impacted his life, leading to a coma at one point and costing him around $7 million to achieve sobriety.
The assistant informed investigators that Matthew Perry hadn’t exhibited signs of illness, hadn’t voiced any health concerns, and hadn’t displayed recent indications of alcohol or drug use. Throughout his life, Perry openly shared his battles with addiction, dating back to his time on “Friends” during the 1990s.
In his 2022 memoir, he wrote, “I adored everything about the show, but I was grappling with my addictions, intensifying my feelings of shame. I harbored a secret that I couldn’t reveal to anyone.”
In the wake of his passing, a foundation was established in his honor to support individuals dealing with addiction.
