Mamata Banerjee Warns PM Modi About Amit Shah

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal is part of Shah’s political strategy. Addressing reporters at Kolkata airport, Banerjee cautioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to trust Shah blindly, calling him a “potential Mir Jafar” within the BJP.

‘This Is Amit Shah’s Game Plan,’ Claims Mamata

Banerjee questioned the timing of the SIR exercise, pointing out that Bengal is still reeling from natural calamities and the festive season. “How can names be verified or added within 15 days?” she asked. She accused Shah of acting like a de facto Prime Minister, adding, “Does the BJP want an independent Election Commission or a party-controlled one?” Her remarks hinted at growing distrust within the ruling party.

This isn’t Mamata’s first swipe at Amit Shah. Earlier this year, she labeled him the “acting Prime Minister,” questioning whether Modi or Shah truly leads the government. In multiple statements, the TMC chief has accused Shah of undermining democratic institutions, saying he is “practically running the country” while Modi focuses on foreign trips, leaving governance in the hands of his close aide.

The BJP responded sharply to Mamata Banerjee’s remarks, accusing her of trying to create rifts within the party. Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, “She’s attempting a divide-and-rule game, but BJP is built on unity. Calling a leader ‘Mir Jafar’ won’t weaken our organization.” He further warned that such political attacks will ultimately backfire on the Trinamool Congress.

Amid the political tension, a team of Election Commission officials led by Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti visited West Bengal to assess preparations for the SIR rollout. Meetings were held with district officers, electoral registration officials, and BLOs to discuss logistics, training, and infrastructure. The process aims to update voter rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, even as the TMC raises objections over timing and intent.

With Bengal’s 2026 Assembly elections approaching, Mamata’s latest remarks add a new dimension to state politics. Her warning to Modi and accusations against Shah signal renewed tensions between the Centre and the state. As the Election Commission moves ahead with its voter list revision, the political temperature in West Bengal continues to rise, setting the stage for another high-stakes showdown.
