Israel has officially completed the final trials of its Iron Beam 450 high-power laser defense system, marking a historic step in modern air defense technology.
Israel’s Iron Beam 450 Laser Defense Set to Deploy by 2025
Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, in collaboration with the Israeli Air Force and the Defense Ministry’s DDR&D, the Iron Beam has now moved from testing to full-scale production. Backed by more than $500 million in government funding, the first operational units are expected to be delivered to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) by the end of 2025.
The Iron Beam 450 is a ground-based, high-energy laser designed to intercept rockets, mortars, drones, and UAVs with unmatched precision. Unlike traditional interceptors such as Iron Dome missiles—which cost tens of thousands of dollars per shot—the Iron Beam operates at just a few dollars per engagement, using only electricity.
This makes it a cost-effective solution during prolonged conflicts and large-scale saturation attacks, where missile stockpiles can run dangerously low.

Tested at Rafael’s Shdema range, the system intercepted multiple aerial threats, including One-Way Attack drones. A dual-effector setup mounted on an ISO container proved high accuracy and stability, even in complex scenarios. The system integrates with Iron Dome’s command and control, enabling a stronger multi-layered defense.
According to Brig. Gen. (Res.) Dr Daniel Gold, head of DDR&D:

Rafael is already investing in next-generation laser weapons, including the Laser Dome, designed for faster, longer-range interception. Additional tactical systems such as Lite Beam and Iron Beam M are also in development to protect mobile units and border areas.
