Keir Starmer Praises India’s Growth, Counters Trump’s ‘Dead Economy’ Remark

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during his maiden visit to India, praised the nation’s strong economic progress, dismissing former US President Donald Trump’s “dead economy” jibe. Standing beside Prime Minister, Starmer said India was firmly on track to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2028, acknowledging the country’s recent leap past Japan to claim the fourth spot.

Starmer began his address with a Hindi greeting, saying, “Namaskar doston,” as he congratulated PM Modi for his leadership and vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. The UK Prime Minister emphasized that every observation from his trip was “absolute proof” that India’s development goals were achievable. He reiterated Britain’s commitment to being a long-term partner in India’s remarkable growth story.

Trump’s ‘Dead Economy’ Comment Draws Global Pushback

Trump’s comments in July, where he dismissed India’s economy as “dead” due to its ties with Russia, sparked widespread criticism. The statement followed US tariffs on Indian imports amid geopolitical tension. However, India’s 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter silenced critics, demonstrating resilience and proving that the Indian economy remains one of the fastest-growing globally.

During the visit, Starmer also expressed full support for India’s long-standing demand for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. “We want to see India taking its rightful place,” he said, joining countries like Russia, France, Germany, and the African Union in backing New Delhi’s claim. The UK Prime Minister underscored India’s vital role in shaping the global democratic order.

India-UK Free Trade Deal a ‘Launchpad for Growth’

Starmer arrived in Mumbai with a 125-member delegation of top UK business leaders, educationists, and entrepreneurs. His discussions with PM Modi centered on strengthening cooperation in trade, defence, and technology. Referring to the newly signed Free Trade Agreement, Starmer called it a “launchpad for two-way growth,” predicting it will double bilateral trade by 2030 and make trade quicker, cheaper, and more rewarding for both nations.

Modi and Starmer Eye Deeper Strategic Partnership

The two leaders also discussed sensitive issues, including pro-Khalistan activities in the UK and the extradition of fugitives such as Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to mutual prosperity, with Starmer highlighting that the partnership between India and the UK is built on trust, innovation, and shared values — marking a new chapter in global cooperation.
