HomeIndiaDurgapur Rape Case: Survivor’s Father Calls Mamata “Mother-Like”

The father of the Durgapur gang rape survivor has expressed regret for his earlier criticism of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, now calling her a “mother-like figure” and appealing for her support in securing justice for his daughter, a medical student from Odisha.

Father’s Appeal For Justice And Mamata Banerjee Role

After initially criticizing Mamata Banerjee for her remarks on women’s safety, the survivor’s father softened his stance. He urged the Chief Minister to personally intervene and ensure a fair, thorough investigation in the case. He also sought forgiveness if his earlier comments caused any offense and emphasized his desire for justice before taking his daughter back to Odisha once she is medically fit.

The Durgapur police have arrested six individuals, including the survivor’s male friend who was with her during the assault. The police are conducting a detailed investigation, including reconstructing the crime scene, to understand the roles each accused played. The survivor’s male friend’s inconsistent statements have led to further questioning to uncover the truth.

The case has triggered significant political reactions. Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and BJP MP Pratap Sarangi have shown support for the survivor, with Sarangi visiting her at the hospital in Durgapur. Opposition parties are demanding a CBI probe amid public outrage over the state’s law-and-order situation. BJP activists protested by distributing red chilli powder to women in Kolkata as a symbol of self-defense.
