The father of the Durgapur gang-rape victim has regretted his criticism of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, now calling her a “mother-like figure” and has sought her support in getting justice for his son, who is a medical student in Odisha.
Father’s plea for justice and Mamata Banerjee’s side
After initially criticising Mamata Banerjee for her comments on women’s safety, the victim’s father has softened his stance. He has urged the Chief Minister to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the case against the mediator and to probe the case. He has also apologised if his earlier comments have caused any offence and stressed his desire for justice before his son is brought back to Odisha after he recovers for treatment.
Durgapur police have arrested six people, including the victim’s male friend, who was with her during the torture. The police are conducting a detailed investigation, including reconstruction of the crime scene, to understand the side of each accused. Further interrogation has been initiated to uncover the truth due to inconsistent statements by the victim’s male friend.
The case has sparked significant political backlash. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and BJP MP Pratap Sarangi have expressed support for the victim, who had come to visit her at a sanatorium in Durgapur. Amid public outrage over the law and order situation in the state, opposition parties are demanding a CBI probe. BJP workers protested by distributing red chilli greasepaint among women in Kolkata as a symbol of self-defense.
