Durga Puja Jewelry Theft Shocks Bhatpara Residents
During the Durga Puja celebrations in Bhatpara, North 24 Parganas, a disturbing incident unfolded that has left the local community in turmoil. While idol immersions occurred on Thursday in some areas and Friday in others, an alarming theft took place where the entire set of jewelry adorning the Durga idol was stolen just as the festival was concluding.
Theft Incident at Kakinara BL-22 Puja Committee Pandals
The ornaments were reported missing late on the night of Dashami at the BL-22 Durga Puja site in Kakinara. Devotees and residents visiting on Ekadashi morning found the goddess’s idol completely stripped of its jewelry. Although the organizing committee had installed CCTV cameras to deter crime, these cameras were removed on Dashami, which may have provided an opportunity to the thieves.
Community Outrage and Emotional Impact
Locals expressed shock and sadness over the theft, emphasizing the sacred value of the jewelry, which had been lovingly offered by devotees. Many pointed out that the idol appeared fully adorned on Dashami evening but was found bare the next day. This incident has deeply hurt the faith and sentiments of the people in Bhatpara.
Local Authorities and Community Leaders Respond
Gopal Raut, Parishad of Bhatpara, promised to replace the stolen jewelry if necessary, stating, “Durga Maa visits us once a year, and it is our responsibility to take care of her. We trust the police to resolve this matter promptly.”
Political Controversy Between TMC and BJP
The theft controversy quickly escalated into a political dispute:
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Stance: Amit Sau, TMC leader and puja committee president, assured support and offered to buy new jewelry. However, this gesture sparked backlash from locals, who demand the recovery of the original stolen ornaments rather than replacements.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Criticism: BJP youth leader Priyangu Pandey condemned TMC’s move, alleging an attempt to cover up the crime by buying new jewelry instead of catching the culprits. Pandey emphasized the sacred significance of the stolen jewelry and demanded a thorough investigation and arrests.
Calls for Justice and Recovery
Residents are united in insisting that political interventions should not override the search for justice. The community wants the stolen ornaments returned and the thieves punished, refusing to accept replacements bought with political motives. This incident has ignited a fierce debate, intertwining religious devotion with political tension in Bhatpara.
