Chennai will receive heavy rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned in its morning weather forecast that Chennai and a few other Tamil Nadu districts would experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning today. Institutions in the districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Kanchipuram, as well as the colleges and institutions in Thiruvallur, have declared the day off.

Chennai experienced intense rainfall that caused flooding in a number of regions. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are under an orange alert from the weather service, with significant rains predicted through December 5. Moving toward the Bay of Bengal, a low pressure system over the Andaman Sea is probably going to turn into a depression.

It is expected to rain heavily in isolated areas along the shore and in nearby districts. On Wednesday, some low-lying areas of Chennai and other Tamil Nadu districts were severely hammered by heavy rain. Pictures of water rising to almost knee level flooding multiple streets in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur surfaced on social media.

Massive traffic bottlenecks were another effect of the continuous rain in Chennai. Ambdatur, Anna Nagar, and Perungudi were among the areas that were flooded; this resulted in slow-moving traffic, and government officials dispersed to clear the stagnant water. Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam stations in Chennai received 23 mm and 9 mm of rain, respectively, from 8.30 on Wednesday morning until 5.30 pm.

For those who want assistance due to rain, the Chennai Corporation has established helpline numbers throughout the city. With 26 mm of rain, Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu received the most. An orange alert was in effect till late Wednesday night in up to 25 districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and the districts that border it, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram.

Up till December 5, the weather service has predicted significant rainfall in Chennai and neighboring regions. The neighboring Puducherry and Tamil Nadu have been placed under an orange alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) due to the likelihood of rainfall between December 2 and 3, with amounts ranging from 115 to 204 mm.

This is because on Wednesday, a low pressure system over the Andaman Sea advanced to form a distinct low pressure region over the south Bay of Bengal. According to the regional meteorological center (RMC) in Chennai, “it is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal on November 30.”

From Wednesday through December 2, isolated periods of intense rain are predicted across the coastline and surrounding districts. On December 2 and 3, isolated, extremely heavy rain is also predicted across Chennai and the north coastal region of Tamil Nadu. The Met Department released an orange signal for Tamil Nadu’s capital and surrounding regions, indicating the probability of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

More southern states and Union territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, and Karaikal, are also expected to see rain and thunderstorm activity over the course of the next five days, through December 4.

A well-marked low pressure region is still present over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the nearby south Andaman Sea, according to the IMD’s most recent advisory. It is predicted that this region would shift to the west-northwest today and form a depression over the Bay of Bengal. On December 2, it is anticipated to become a cyclonic storm.

Up to five NDRF teams have been sent to the districts of Chennai, Chengalpet, and Villupuram in response to the cyclone alert. Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered authorities, ministers, MLAs, and local body members to provide all required aid to residents in the areas affected by the severe rain in Tamil Nadu.
