CBI Takes Charge of Karur Stampede Investigation Following Supreme Court Order
The Central Bureau of Investigation( CBI) has officially taken over the Karur rush case, in which 41 people lost their lives during a political rally organised by actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam( TVK).
According to officers, a special CBI platoon has formerly visited the incident point at Velusamypuram in Karur, Tamil Nadu, to begin its disquisition. The woeful rush took place on September 27, leaving over 60 people injured.
As part of standard procedure, the CBI hasre-registered the FIR originally filed by Tamil Nadu Police and has informed the original court about its involvement.
The Supreme Court transferred the case to the CBI after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam filed a solicitation seeking an independent and unprejudiced inquiry. The court instructed the CBI Director to assign a elderly officer to lead the inquiry and appoint supporting officers for backing.
To insure translucency, the apex court also formed a three- member administrative commission led by former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi to cover the progress of the disquisition.
A bench comprising judges J. K. Maheshwari and N. V. Anjaria observed that the incident has left a deep impact civil and stressed the need to guard the abecedarian rights of victims’ families.
Emphasizing the significance of a fair inquiry, the court noted that certain statements made by elderly police officers to the media could undermine public trust. It stressed that restoring faith in the felonious justice system requires the disquisition to be both unprejudiced and independent.
