Ahmedabad recommended as host of 2030 Commonwealth Games
Ahmedabad bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games has gained momentum after the Commonwealth Sports Executive Board recommended the city as the preferred host. The final decision will be taken at the Commonwealth General Assembly in Glasgow on 26 November 2025. However, this will be India’s first time hosting the Games since Delhi in 2010 – if approved, it would be a significant milestone for both Gujarat and the country’s sporting ambitions.
Key recommendations from the Commonwealth Sports Board
The decision was deemed “strategically important for the future of the Commonwealth movement” by the executive board. Ahmedabad has outpaced competitors including Nigeria due to India’s extensive planning and government-backed structural design. The city’s successful bid places it as a future global sports mecca and strengthens India’s international sporting clout.
Gujarat’s Rs 37,000 crore Olympic readiness target
Ahmedabad’s target has been set based on Gujarat’s Rs 37,000 crore Olympic readiness programme, led by the Urban Housing and Development Department. This includes construction of a new coliseum, expansion of metro lines, development of roads and development of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave. About Rs 5,000 crore will be directly focused on hosting the Commonwealth Games, building world-class venues and facilities for athletes.
Laying the foundation stone for India’s 2036 Olympic dream
Hosting the 2030 CWG is not just an event – it is a step towards India’s 2036 Olympic aspirations. Infrastructure like the Motera-linked metro corridor and improved communal connectivity will pave the way for Olympic-quality facilities. Officials say that hosting the CWG in Ahmedabad can serve as a “test run” to showcase India’s organisational and infrastructural capabilities to the world.
Public support and global recognition
Still, if approved, Ahmedabad will be the alternative Indian municipality after Delhi to host the Commonwealth Games. Indian Olympic Association president P. T. Usha said the decision reflects India’s journey towards “Developing India 2047”. The central and state governments are combining sports and social development initiatives to project Ahmedabad as a next-generation smart sports municipality.
Commonwealth sports community response
The international sports community has relished the development. Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadler called it a “centenary celebration with a modern twist”. She said the finale will showcase sustainability, youth engagement and innovation. After the blessing, the specifics will begin directly, integrating the ethics of green infrastructure and international Swish practices.
Ahmedabad’s sporting future on the world map
The 2030 Commonwealth Games could redefine India’s sporting narrative. For Ahmedabad, it signals global recognition as a Mecca of sporting discovery – connecting core ambitions with global excellence. As India awaits the final blessing in Glasgow, the impetus behind Gujarat’s sports infrastructure signals a decisive step towards achieving a global sporting destination.
